Hinton Named National Merit Semifinalist

September 15, 2022

HATTIESBURG, MS - National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has recognized Sacred Heart Catholic School student, Donald (Beau) Everett Hinton, as a Semifinalist. Hinton represents less than 1 percent of the nation’s high school seniors. He has shown high academic performance in college preparatory course work, scored high on standardized tests, and has the full endorsement of Sacred Heart Catholic School.

“Beau has established his goals and continues to focus on the effort it takes to accomplish them,” said Garlinda Walls, high school faculty. “I taught Beau in AP U.S. History, Mississippi Studies, and World Geography. He puts in the time and work to make a difference. He is insightful, creative, and will always go the extra step for excellence.”

Beau is involved in one of Sacred Heart’s flagship programs, Mock Trial. He is also a member of the drum line, cross country and powerlifting teams, co-president of Environmental Club, and vice president of National Honor Society. Outside of Sacred Heart, Beau was active in the 2021-22 Mayor’s Youth Council in Hattiesburg and Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp.

“Sacred Heart has provided me with a great education where teachers are here to help,” said Hinton. “This school has supported me and provided the assistance I have needed to be successful in college and as a professional.”

Beau won the VFW Post 3036 Voice of Democracy Essay Contest and placed second on the state level last year. As a semifinalist, he will continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship.

Sacred Heart Catholic School is proud of Beau and will continue to support him throughout the competition. Finalists are announced in spring 2023.
