Hinton Named National Merit Finalist

January 2023

Hattiesburg, MS – Beau Hinton, senior at Sacred Heart Catholic School, is recognized as a National Merit Finalist with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). As a finalist, Hinton has joined one of the most prestigious academic communities in America.

Hinton scored one of the highest PSAT/NMSQT scores in Mississippi which earned him a National Merit Semifinalist status in September 2022.  Less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors receive this honor. He submitted additional information including an essay regarding his experience with the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp in hopes he would advance as a finalist.

“Beau is an exceptional student here at Sacred Heart,” said Karyn Charles, high school principal. “He has excelled academically while participating in numerous extracurricular activities at school and in the community. I am so proud of him and can’t wait to see what’s next in his bright future.”

As a National Merit Finalist, Hinton has received a full scholarship to The University of Alabama and plans to major in finance. His scholarship covers tuition, housing, a book scholarship, summer research or international study allowance, and a $3,500 supplemental scholarship.

“I am grateful for the teachers at Sacred Heart,” said Hinton. “They care about each individual student and provide opportunities in and out of the classroom.” Hinton is a member of Sacred Heart’s prestigious Mock Trial team, drum line, powerlifting team, golf, cross country, and Mu Alpha Theta.

Hinton’s announcement continues Sacred Heart Catholic School’s tradition of excellence with National Merit Scholars. Since the reopening of the high school in 2007, Sacred Heart has produced 18 scholarship award recipients including 11 finalists.
